This figure was inspired by the nymphs in the John William Waterhouse painting 'Hylas and the Nymphs', circa 1896, now in Manchester City Art Gallery. The painting was exhibited widely, including at the Paris exhibition of 1900.
Waterhouse is renowned for using a select band of beautiful girls for his models. Little is known about them. It is known, however, that his favourite was a Muriel Foster (1878 - 1969) who posed for three of the six water nymphs in the picture including the figure on the right hand side, of which this sculpture is an interpretation.
